Fort Santiago

Landmarks

Built in 1773 by Engr. Dionisio O’Kelly, the baluartillo defended the curtain wall from seaside attacks and served as a storage area for supplies like ammunition and food. Restored in 1983, it now houses the chapel of Our Lady of Guadalupe, with a copy of the image from the tilma of the shepherd in Guadalupe, Mexico, who saw the Virgin Mary's apparition.

Alongside the solid curtain wall of Baluartillo de San Francisco Javier are the ruins of a building known as the American Barracks. Former Philippine President Elpidio Quirino was imprisoned here for 16 days in 1943, during the Japanese Occupation. The ruins underwent retrofitting in 2017 and are now used as an open-air exhibition space.

This main room of the soldiers’ school was converted into a chapel-cell for Dr. Jose Rizal, who was transferred here after 56 days of imprisonment at the barracks across Plaza de Armas. It was here on December 30, 1896, that Rizal married Josephine Bracken, an Irish woman who lived with him during his four-year exile in Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte.

After the Battle of Manila in 1945, approximately 600 decomposing bodies were discovered around Intramuros. These remains were victims of the brutal conflict and destruction. They were later laid to rest in a mass grave beneath a white marble cross, located beside the Dungeons of Fort Santiago, a solemn reminder of the tragic loss of life during the war.

This postern was used by the occupants of Fort Santiago as a passage to the Pasig River. During the British invasion of Manila in 1762, Simon de Anda escaped to Pampanga through this postern. Manila was returned to the Spanish in 1764. The riverside promenade outside was rehabilitated by TIEZA as an additional attraction.

Postigo Soledad

This site was once the location of the residence of the fort commander, known as Casa del Castellano, or House of the Castilian, referring to the Fort Commander. The structure, built in the 17th century, was expanded over time and served as a key part of the fort's operations until its destruction during World War II.
